The Intellectual Quest covers the developments in Buddhist philosophy and reviews sites that include Nalanda University, Vikramshila University, Bodhgaya, and Udaigiri in Orissa as well as examples of art from Pala period (5th–12th century) sites.
Post-screening discussion with Christopher Kelley
This series of films by Benoy K. Behl is the first that depicts all of the ancient Buddhist sites of India as well as other Asian countries. The story of the Buddha and of the development of Buddhism is traced through the art and architecture of over one hundred major monuments. The series is presented as a complement to the new exhibition From India East.
About the Speaker
Christopher Kelley is currently a Ph. D. candidate, under Robert Thurman, in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism at Columbia University. He received a B.A. in Anthropology and Sociology from Lafayette College (1997), an M.A. in Religion from Columbia University (2004), and an M. Phil from Columbia University (2009). Kelley is presently writing a dissertation on Buddhism and Human Rights. He also teaches classes at The New School in New York City, and has been a preceptor in the core curriculum at Columbia College.
