International Spread of Buddhism covers the important Buddhist sites of Sri Lanka (Sigiriya, Pollonaruva, and the Dambula caves), Myanmar (Bagan), Thailand, Tibet (the early monasteries), Nepal (Swayambhunatha Stupa), Bhutan, China, and Japan.
This series of films by Benoy K. Behl is the first that depicts all of the ancient Buddhist sites of India as well as other Asian countries. The story of the Buddha and of the development of Buddhism is traced through the art and architecture of over one hundred major monuments. The series is presented as a complement to the new exhibition From India East.
About the Speaker
Denise Patry Leidy, who received her Ph.D. in Chinese Art History from Columbia University, is curator of Chinese Sculpture and Decorative Arts in the Department of Asian Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Prior to this appointment she served as Curator for The Asia Society Gallery and also worked at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has taught at Boston University, Wheaton College, and The Massachusetts College of Art from which she received a Distinguished Teaching Award (1981). Dr. Leidy’s research focuses on pan-Asian exchanges of imagery and technology.
