Japanese Kotoist Yumi Kurosawa is joined by guest artist and tabla master Deep Singh for an innovative musical performance emphasizing both tradition and modernity. Kurosawa, labeled a “mesmerizing… inventive, cosmopolitan composer,” by The New York Times, will showcase her unique approach to the Koto by venturing beyond the limits of traditional acoustics, exploring classical techniques with contemporary, electronically-infused flair. Kurosawa’s solo virtuosity, featured for the first half of the concert, will then be accented with the echoing, sharp tones of Singh’s Indian tabla.

    About the Musicians

Yumi Kurosawa began her training on the Koto at age three. She has since toured extensively worldwide, receiving multiple awards for her music, including first prize at the Japanese National Koto Competition in 1989 and a scholarship from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan in 1998. Since her arrival in New York City in 2002, Kurosawa has performed in such venues as the Blue Note Jazz Club and Carnegie Hall, and her innovative, seamless blending of traditional Japanese music with elements of modern Jazz and electronica has been praised by The New York Times and the Washington Post. Her first album, “Beginning of a Journey” was released in 2009, and she is currently composing music for Matthew Ozawa's upcoming work “Fallen,” for which Kurosawa is musical director and featured performer.

From an early age, tabla, percussion, and voice virtuoso Deep Singh was immersed in music. After initially being taught both vocals and the harmonium by his father, Singh became a disciple of the Punjab Gharana under Padma Shree Ustad Allah Rakha Khan, eventually becoming one of the senior guru-brothers of the tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussain. Singh has established himself not only as one of the most sought-after soloist and accompanist on the tabla, but as a versatile composer and Hindustani vocalist who specializes in a variety of instruments including the harmonium, bass, and keyboard.
