Bogarde later recalled his face burning while shooting the film’s final scenes where his skin had been painted deathly white.  When he later found the tube of cream that had been used, it was labeled "Keep away from eyes and skin."

Author Thomas Mann witnessed the outbreak of the Venetian cholera epidemic in May 1911, which became a motif of moral decay in the novella on which the film is based.

Björn Andrésen is dubbed, since the Swedish actor was playing a Polish character.

    About the Speaker

Michael Bastian is an American menswear designer based in New York City.  His first job after graduating from Babson College was as an assistant buyer at Abraham & Strauss, followed by positions within Sotheby's, Tiffany & Co., Polo Ralph Lauren, and most recently, Bergdorf Goodman, where he was the men's fashion director for five years. It was this experience that led Bastian to launch his own designer men's wear line, Michael Bastian, which, in its fourteenth season is carried in over 35 retail locations in America, Europe, Asia, Canada and the Middle East.

In 2007, Michael was nominated for the CFDA Newcomer Menswear Designer of the Year award, and in 2011, his special collaboration line, Gant by Michael Bastian, was nominated by GQ magazine for 'Best New Designer in America'. In June 2011, Michael Bastian was named the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year. He had been nominated for this same honor the 3 previous years and once more for 2013.

The overwhelming success of Michael’s 2013 collaboration with global retailer Uniqlo led to the line’s reprisal in Summer 2014.  Other licenses and accessories collaborations include jewelry with George Frost (George Frost X Michael Bastian), bags and small leather goods with Frank Clegg, hats with Eugenia Kim (Mr. Kim for Michael Bastian), socks under the label Soxiety for Michael Bastian, and shoes with Stubbs & Wootton.
