Ignorance

What you don't know could hurt you

The fall series at the Rubin Museum of Art
September—December 2013

"It is ignorance that smothers, and it is carelessness that makes it invisible." – Gautama Buddha in the Sutta Nipata

According to Buddhist thinking, ignorance is the greatest impediment to enlightenment. This fall we aim to clear the path a little with some help from our friends Laurie Anderson, Alec Baldwin, Rosanne Cash, and many others.

"The quest for enlightenment is at the core of Tibetan Buddhist teachings and is reflected throughout the material culture of the Himalayas. By attaining this ultimate awareness, one can combat the consequences of ignorance, a state of being that prevents us from looking beyond ourselves and connecting with the world as it truly exists. In today’s digital society there is a hunger for both immediate information and a deeper sense of understanding. The Ignorance series approaches these desires from a multitude of angles and aims to scratch away some layers of complexity on the journey to gaining knowledge and, with any luck, wisdom."
Tim McHenry, Director of Public Programs and Performance
